More than ever, consumers are paying attention to the latest trends in the food industry, especially when it comes to foods with health benefits.
After the Natural Products Expo Virtual Spark Change event a few weeks ago, and with CHFA Connect around the corner, we've got health food on the brain. We came across this informative summary from Amanda Hartt (Lead Market Analyst for NEXT Data & Insights and New Hope Network) and Adrienne Smith's (Senior Food Business Reported for New Hope Network) discussion of top trends in the food industry:
Culture & Traditions
As Hartt said, “Brands are leading with unique ingredients from around the world that either is unique in culture or unique in terra flora…not only are these brands culturally rich, but they’re giving back and impacting the communities through which they source from.” With this much-needed diversity spreading throughout grocery stores and supermarkets across North America, we’re seeing brands create products from traditional and ancient practices from around the world. An example of this is AYO Foods, which formulates frozen meals with egusi, which is ground melon seeds from Liberia.
Plant-Based Products
As we’ve mentioned in previous articles, plant-based foods are on the rise. With more plant alternatives than ever, brands are having to get creative with new ingredients and health benefits. For example, Lavva has created a pili nut and plantain-based yogurt, something entirely new and exciting to consumers interested in plant-based products.
Further, plant-based protein is in high demand. Consumers are seeking “cleaner” and more calorie-conscious alternatives to traditional or animal-based protein products. With this demand, ingredients like peas, chickpeas, and lentils have become strong leaders.
New Hope also takes a look at the top ten trends year-over-year among its Expo West exhibitors and identified the following from 2020:
