Find out what our team has been up to.
Next up for our spotlight series is Ben White! Ben is our Flexible Packaging Specialist and Associated's expert on all things flexible packaging:
1) How long have you worked at Associated?
In December, it will be nine years.
2) Describe your journey at Associated so far.
When I started, I was the lone Totani operator in ALP’s new Flexible Division. As the division grew, my role changed to the Flexible Division Coordinator, overseeing the day-to-day operations. In my current role as Flexible Packaging Specialist, I work closely with both the Sales and Production teams to ensure the films we use fit the customer’s applications and flow well through our production processes.
3) How would you describe the work environment?
Challenging and rewarding; no two days are ever the same. We are always working to enhance existing or develop new processes to deliver a quality product to our customers.
4) What is your favourite thing about working here?
The people, for sure, are number one! It really does feel like a family here at ALP. Like any family, there are highs and lows, but everyone rallies to support each other to be successful at the end of the day.
5) What's been your best day at work so far?
It's hard to pick just one - there have been so many.
6) What are you most proud of since working here?
I would have to say the growth and success of the Flexible Division. When I started, there was one pouch machine. Today, the division has ten machines and over 30 employees.
7) What is the biggest challenge you've had since working here?
The biggest challenge I face is trying to stay ahead of changing market trends. The emergence of the need for sustainable packaging solutions is a huge area of focus for me. My goal is to ensure that we stay up to speed on market demands and have solutions for customers who are looking for sustainable packaging.
8) Do you have a particular moment or memory at Associated that stands out for you?
The first interview I had with Shaun (ALP President) and Dan (ALP COO) stands out for me. Knowing the challenges involved with flexible packaging, I wasn’t sure how I felt about coming on board with a company that was just starting out in this industry. After a couple of minutes of talking with them, any concerns I had were gone. The enthusiasm and the desire that Shaun had for ALP to be successful in this market was infectious, and it didn’t take long for me to decide to join the team.
9) What does a typical day look like for you, and what are you currently working on?
For me, a typical day consists of responding to emails, coming up with film recommendations for our sales team, and pre-flighting production dockets. I am currently working on monthly education sessions for our sales team on the different stages of production and equipment capabilities in the Flexible Division.
10) Describe the advancement opportunities here.
The advancement opportunities are endless. There are so many people here who start in one position and advance to another.
11) How does Associated support professional development?
ALP wholeheartedly supports all professional development. The management team always shows support to employees who have a desire to learn and develop professionally.
12) What is on your wish list for the next five years?
In the next five years, I am hopeful that we can add a few more pieces of equipment that will allow us to increase our capabilities to supply more enhanced products to our customers.
13) Given the chance, who would you be for a day?
No one, in particular, I just want to be me.
Businesses across diverse industries choose Associated Labels & Packaging to expand their product lines.
